May 3, 1980, when we were only 13 years old, my friend, Cari Lightner was killed by a drunk driver as she walked to a nearby church carnival. Little did we know at the time, her death would affect how the entire nation viewed drunk driving. Her mother started Mother’s Against Drunk Drivers. I still live in the same house I grew up in, only a few houses away from where they lived. I drive past the street she was killed on a daily basis, and the cemetery she was buried in is within walking distance from my house. I remember the day like it was yesterday although it happened 44 years ago. Some things you just never forget. Continue to rest In peace my dear friend. Carime Lightner
