Elvis Presley recorded the first Rock a Billy song in Sam Phillip's Memphis Recording Serving in 1955. Carl Perkins was an up and coming artist recording for Sam Phillip's Sun Records as well. Sun Records did have some amazing artists, but the real unsung heroes of Rock a Billy are Eddie Cochrane and Gene Vincent.
Gene Vincent and his Blue Cats were signed by Capitol Records when they didn't have a clue about marketing Rock 'n Roll. He recorded a string of hits in the 50s, (his most famous was "Be Bop a Lula") but never got huge like Elvis. Gene Vincent died in 1973 in Portland Oregon, suffering from ulcers, and alcoholism.
Eddie Cochran was very successful, but like Buddy Holly for only a short time. Eddie Cochran had recorded 5 hit songs at the time of his death (at 21 years old) in 1960. His biggest hit was "Summertime Blues".
If you've even heard of these dudes, which one did it better? |
