By saying "Of course", you are saying that the individual is who they are now, because of who they have been in the past... that their success and their failure in the past makes them who they are now... that you would believe in them to such an extent that you could become seriously involved with them emotionally and physically.

By saying "No way", you're saying that there will always be a string attached to their "previous life" and that they can never leave it behind.
