I work with mentally challenged adults. One of my clients makes racist remarks often. I have had several talks with him about his inappropriate comments. This man is very intelligent and if he did not have a speech impediment, no one would even realize he had MR. Sooo, today, at his doctors, he said a certain neighborhood had "too many colored". I pretended to not understand what he was saying, but the nurses and receptionist and the doctor were all within hearing distance and one of the nurses asked him what he said. He then said, " too many coons" which appalled and embarassed me, but they seemed to find it funny. One of the ladies even said, " I hear you'!!
I just looked at them all, speechless. I mean, mentally challenged adults, like children and sometimes even "normal" people need to be told that they are being rude or inappropriate. I feel that they just encouraged bad behavior by their actions.I left the office and had a chat with him in private. 4 of his staff members are African American, and i asked him if he would have said the offensive remarks if they had been with him instead of me, and he admitted that he would not have. He knows the difference between right and wrong.
My question is: should I have said something to the staff or doctor? This is really bugging me because I feel I should have said something.. So would you have? Honestly? |
