Negative Message
Rap music used to send a positive message to teenagers in earlier years. It warned teenagers about sex, drugs, diseases, and early pregnancies. Rap music used to tell young men what kind of man they wanted to be in the future, and what kind of woman women wanted to be. Rap music today is a bad influence on young teens. Not only does it encourage inappropriate behavior, it also sends a negative message.
A student at Buena High School named Reggie Taylor, went to jail for life, for the murder of his best friend. Reggie had been listening to rapper Biggie Smalls all year long. He had come to school rapping a song of his, which was describing how to shoot another person. Reggie had joked about it and his best friend Rashaun to meet him at his house after school. Reggie blasted Biggie Smalls songs and had began to show Rashaun how to hold a gun. He did not know that there were bullets in the gun and shot his friend in the head, and now he is in jail for life.
The degrading of women is also present in today’s rap music. Women are called B@#$$ and Ho@! A five-year-old boy was walking down the street with his mother and a car came driving by playing a song that the little boy knew. “Smack the b@$#$, make her suck your d^%%$.” The little boy sang along until his mother told him to stop. Rap music degrades women and also sends a negative message to all ages.
The lyrics of rap music promote violence a great deal. For Example, “I’m the illest rapper to hold a cordless, patrolling the corners, looking for hookers to punch in the mouth with a roll of quarters. I’m meaner in action than Rosco beating James Tarteenyer(lyrics by Eminem).” Tyrell Moorey, a seventeen-year-old student at Cherry Hill High School, was killed at a basketball game, august eighteenth two thousand and seven. The sixteen-year-old boy that killed him said he shot him because Tyrell stole his shoes. In the song “Hate it or Love it” by the Game, a boy got killed because he stole another boy’s shoes. The song was very popular at the time. The boy mentioned that he got the idea form the song, now he is facing life in prison.
Not all rap music sends a negative message to young teenagers. Some rap music influences young teens to be more mature one out of the rest, and not to follow the crowd. The lyrics tell them to be a leader and not to be a follower. It would be more beneficial if rappers nowadays send a message of encouraging words to young teens growing up in this horrid, bad, terrible world. Rap music should give teens a little more encouragement and not promote sex, drugs, homophobia and violence. Parents should be more aware of what their children are listening to, because it could later on effect who they are, and who they become one day in the future.
