6 weeks ago I had a 2TB HDD blow up, sparks and everything. The Printed Circuit Board is shot. After several weeks of email I got in touch with three separate sections of Seagate. Tech support said they will RMA replace my drive, the RMA dept said send it in for evaluation, and the third referred me back to the others.

This drive was flaky from day one, always cutting out after completing a task and not reappearing until I restarted my system. I am told it was most likely the PCB and that a new one should correct the problem.

Sending it back to Seagate will cost about $15-16 with shipping and insurance (I am told). They may however choose not to replace it, and void my entire warranty. It clearly says burned boards are a NG on their web site. If I send it to them and they refuse to replace it I could always go with my plan B but it would be a lot more time consuming.

If the heads are not fried I can get the PCB to fix it for $49 and it would read the data on there so no loss. But it means shipping the bad PCB out of the country which I do not like (again about $15-16 shipping I am told).

So my question;

Should I send it to Seagate. - A

Should I simply buy the board. - B

Should I put it on the shelf and take the loss. - C
