How should I dress for Masquerade Party?

Have any of you been to this fancy party before? I've been invited to this party in August,but the thing is, I've never been to such a party so I don't know how to dress myself.I've googled and found few definations which is rather confusing.Some said it just another costume party like Halloween and some said you have to dress in Victorian's and wear a mask.

Any insights? Thanks in advance guys.
