Chivalry has been around for over a thousand years, but in todays modern society has the time of chivalry and the gallant knight come and gone?

Has the mantle of chivalry, courtesy and respect been left behind? If it is shown is it appreciated? Do women WANT to be treated in a chivalrous manner or are they content to allow the ever declining standards of behavior to continue?

When I was younger my father and grand fathers and my uncles all reinforced in me the traits that they considered to be exemplary in behavior. I remember being on the Long Island railroad one day with my father going into Manhatten and was told to get up and offer a woman my chair, my father and I both rose, gave up our seats and were thanked for our kind act. I was taught to hold open doors, pull out chairs, offer my coat if a woman was cold, Hold open car doors and to open them. I was taught to remove my hat in the presence of a lady and was told by all of them that it was the small act that differentiated a gentleman from a common man.

Flash forward to just a few years ago, I am on a train with my son who at the time was 10yo. We are in Manhattan going from Downtown to Rockefeller center and we offer our seats to a woman that comes on the the train, we were greeted with (and I quote) "What? Don't you think I cant stand?". I was truly horrified. Here it was just 30years after my father taught me theses things and now I was being rebuked instead of thanked for a courtesy. It truly amazed me and still does.

Now I ask, Are the old rules of COURTESY AND RESPECT considered antiquated and out of fashion? Do Women expect and appreciate them? Or should we allow the moral decline to continue to accelerate and let the old codes of gallantry pass into the mists of time never to be revisited? I know I will continue to open doors, light Cigarettes, pull out chairs and remove my hat. But does it make a difference and does it really matter?
