There are 3 levels of friends: Fans, Friends, and Family. If someone fans you, you get some points. If you make someone a friend, you can see that person's"activity" like when they make new friends or when they leave people comments. The only place I've seen"family" used is when you want to make certain photos private so only specific people can see them. (You can flag albums for family only.)
