I just talked to an ex-boyfriend of mine who told me he's getting married next month. I know he really doesn't love her and I could stop it if I wished. But at a cost, which I really don't think I can live with. Although, its not like he'd cheat on her because the one he truly loves won't ever marry him and won't sleep with him, especially behind his wife's back. Yeah, its a bit complex, lol. And he's the kind of guy that wants is woman home cooking, cleaning, and fetching his beer, which *definitely* was a key factor in why we broke up.

I feel like if I take the position that marriage is a commitment that truly means forsaking all others for the one you love, then I should stop him from doing this. For her sake too, as she should have the cance to be wit someone who truly loves her, in a way this guy can't. And because e really doesn't love her the right way either. But I have nothing to offer in its place, because even though I love him as a friend, my preceding definition of marriage would mean that *I* certainly shouldn't do it either (Yay fear of commitment!), and I really don't want to deal with those issues again either.

On the other hand, marriage effectively functions as a social and legal convention, and if I believe it is "just a piece of paper" then I really shouldn't care whether he married her or anyone else, really. Because its just a way to legally recognize the status quo. And she needs health insurance. (yeah, a really really bad reason to get married and another reason I'm pro-domestic partnership rights. Because I do feel you should get married for love I guess.)

So should I try and stop him? Or should I wave good-bye and let him "settle" for someone he doesn't love?
