Hooray, my state has made random drug testing for teachers a nonnegotiable part of the new 2 year contract they are due to vote on this week.
The drug testing requirement comes after several school teachers have been arrested in recent months for dealing and using drugs. These drugs involved are marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy and crystal meth.
The department of education currently test bus drivers, physical therapists and auto mechanics instructors. The urine test cost $35 each and cost would rise if a random selection of 13,000 teachers were tested.
Opponents say that, employers often test 15-20 percent of their work force and to meet that mark, the department would have to test about 2,600 teachers annually, which would cost taxpayers about $91,000. This is a high price to pay for the recklessness of a few. (I'll say, hogwash!)
Parents and others say, drug testing for teachers should be a job requirement and the cost of the test shouldn't be an issue, because the issue is safety for children in school. (I say, keep kids safe)
So, mummsfolks...what's your thoughts on this topic? |
