[If this offends any disabled people, or relatives/friends of disabled people, I'm sorry, but sometimes trying to have an honest discussion will result in people being offended.]
My girlfriend is a high school English teacher who is dual-certified to work with both general ed and special ed students. Before this, she was a special ed aide in a middle school and worked in a group home for disabled adults. Her experiences have led me to believe that the word "retarded" is used far too liberally in insulting people that are either believed to be of substandard intelligence (admittedly, something that is hard to quantify), or as is more often the case, people who say or ask things thought by others to be of an inferior nature, intellectually.
For me, this is not an issue of political correctness. This is also something that I am not very passionate about it, so don't worry that you'll offend me. If there's any drama over this subject, it won't be coming from me. (Sorry to make this so long)
So my question is: do you think that it's insulting to people who are disabled to compare people who are just intellectually lazy with disabled people who, in most cases, are trying hard to function at the highest level that they can? |
