| live in a building that has about 12 units in it... and my best friend lives upstairs. we believe she left her iron on and started a fire. she left and was not home when this all happened. i don't have a workking smoke alarm in my place , i have told my landlord about a couple of times before... well i came home saturday after a stop at the bar... i have been working a lot... and getting 2-3 hours sleep latley... so i hit the pillow and was dead to the world.... well the fire started... it wasen't a flaming fire.. it was a wood burning, slow roast... i woke up to the firefighters banging on my door... and of course my alarm didn't go off... the door was stuck and i couldn't get out the smoke was everywhere.. i could barely see a foot infront of me when i open the bedroom door... they had to take what i think was an axe.. or a sledge hammer to get in... they came in on their hands and knees.. with hoses and masks on... the smoke as so bad...the bedroom wasen't as bad yet beacuse i had it shut.. it was slowly creeping in under the door. i was treated with oxygen... and watched them tear my place to apart.. the celing caved in in the bedroom.. and the hallway and bathroom.... the walls in the hallway and bathroom were torn apart too. i lived in the basement to so all the water the used floded my place as well.. so today is the day after.. and i still don't have hot water,heat,gas or electric... i told my landlady that i need my deposit back to get back on my feet... to rent a truck..and to clean up and store what i could actually keep. she told me that she wasen't going to give it back! suprised me since the place is not up to code.. no smoke alarms in the hallways .. or my apartment others claimed to not have working ones either.... so my question is.... do i count my blessings and get on with my life.. or take her to court and get my deposit back... |
